 Pakistan's First Plastic-Free District | Hunza:

Hunza is declared as Asia’s first plastic-free zone, not only in Pakistan. Hunza’s campaign to control the usage of plastic in the region was started by the locals of Hunza. The same campaign was supported by Nestle, MAINETTI PAKISTAN (PVT) LTD, AKRSP, and the local government.


"The People of Hunza deserve congratulations for implementing the ban. I hope they will continue cooperating with the administration to keep the city clean and free of plastics."

The PM's advisor said that Pakistan would sign agreements to start the construction of public parks in Gilgit-Baltistan. According to the UN, 164,332 tons of plastics are dumped into the Indus basin which is the 2nd highest of any ocean globally.

Effects of Plastics:

When plastic comes in contact with heat, it converts into smaller particles. These smaller particles become parts of the food cycle of Marine life, humans, and also Mammals living on land. According to research, humans eat 72,000 microplastics from indoor and outdoor air annually which poses serious health risks including cancer, fatigue, and obesity. Role of EPA(Environmental Protection Agency)

In Hunza, the authorities worked with the Gilgit-Baltistan Environmental Protection and the Karakoram Area Development Organization to launch the pilot ban which aims to clean up the narrow, mountain-flanked valley that attracts more than a half million tourists a year.


Around the world, cities, regions, and countries are trying to cut back on plastic waste, banning the use of items such as throwaway plastic shopping bags and drinking straws.

The purpose of the event was to educate the public regarding environmental pollution caused by plastics. After the event, the GB government decided to make Gilgit city a plastic-free city by 2020.


The use of plastic bags is strongly banned in Hunza and huge fines are given to those who either sell or dispose of plastic bags. Hunza became a symbol of Asia to make it happen, that nothing is impossible to achieve, after the FREE PLASTIC ZONE CAMPAIGN. Hunza became more attractive after removing tons of plastic garbage from the region.


It is the first district to achieve this milestone in the whole of Asia and is a cause of Pride for every Pakistani. May Allah let us achieve more and more milestones and let us become the pride of Pakistan.
